Del Potro announces grandmother's death through a touching Instagram post
Juan Martin del Potro is going through a pretty tough time. The world no. 5 who is dealing with a knee injury, also lost his grandmother recently. Announcing the sad news through an Instagram post, the 30-year-old posted a photo of him holding his grandmother's hand.
He also captioned the picture in a strongly emotive manner. "When less strength was left in you, when your desire was to rest in peace, when you could not keep the suffering and many other painful things, you were able to give me your hand and give me your last moment of love that was taken on this photo and that will forever stay on my heart.
It was not needed, but you did it once again showing your strength and your love for your family and nephews. I love you grandmother. Forever." Last year, the Tandil native had lost his dog Cesar's while in May 2017 his grandfather died.
He skipped the Madrid Open at the time and he came back to compete in Rome losing to Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. Earlier this year, after reaching the quarter-final in Delray Beach (lost to Mackenzie McDonald), del Potro withdrew from the Mexican Open and Indian Wells in order to give his injured knee some more time to recover.
He was the defending champion in both events. Acapulco was eventually won by Nick Kyrgios, while men's singles action is yet to start in Indian Wells. Roger Federer, who is defending finalist's points is playing in Indian Wells after winning his 100th title at the Dubai Open.
