Marco Cecchinato delays Stockholm debut as he pulls out of event
Italian world No. 69 Marco Cecchinato won't be making his main draw debut at the Stockholm Open this year as he has withdrawn from the event. The 27-year-old tried to clinch a main draw spot in Stockholm three years ago but he failed to make it past the qualifying event.
Back then, the Italian was beaten by Germany's Mathias Bachinger in the Stockholm qualifying first round. Former world No. 16 Cecchinato competed at this week's , where he continued his disappointing season and series of bad results.
The Italian managed to make it past the Shanghai qualifying event, before suffering a first round defeat to France's Benoit Paire in the first round. Meanwhile, the Stockholm organizers won't be using their two special entry spots -- and with the withdrawal of Cecchinato -- three places in the Stockholm main draw have opened.
The threw Open spots are set to be filled by former world No. 17 Tomic, rising French star Corentin Moutet and Italy's Stefano Travaglia. Tomic, a 2014 Stockholm semifinalist, will be making his fifth main draw appearance at the tournament next week. On the other side, both Moutet and Travaglia are set for a Stockholm debut.
